The Ipswich Society

The Ipswich Society is a fairly large and well established group of dedicated people who take an interest in what happens around Ipswich Town.  Their website is small and quite old fashioned, but it does the job. Here’s a link to it if you want to read more about them and what they do.  The Ipswich Society – Read More

We have joined this group as we wanted to become more involved with the place we live in.  Ipswich is a great place to live with so many things to do, and I would like to contribute in a small way and get some enjoyment out of it too.  I think the group has been running many years, it says it was started in 1960.  Before I was even born (not way off but still, anything counts these days!).

I know I should be writing!

University hasn’t started back yet but I know I should be doing more on my dissertation, and reading my Intercultural Communication book.  I will pay for it in April when all the essays and dissertations are due in.  But I just don’t have a) the time and b) the inclination to do it.  I have to keep saying to myself – “how much do you want this degree?”  “It’s nearly over and you only have a few months left.”  “You’ll be so proud of yourself when you do get this degree.”

The thing is I didn’t finish last year due to illness, so although I completed a good part of the modules I still have 3 left. 3 bloody hard ones too. All my friends have gone, and graduated this year, and although there are some really nice people in the year I am now in, I don’t know them very well and don’t feel a part of any friendships.  It gets lonely when I am there, where it used to be that I couldn’t get to see half the friends I wanted to. As I am only doing 3 modules too I am not in class the same amount as the other students.

Happy place.

But, and its a big butt!  I do want this degree more than anything else right now.  I really feel like it would be one of my lifes achievements. I know I will be very pleased when it’s done but for now I just wanna forget it and carry on with my lovely new job.  Working an extra day has also impacted on my time.  And especially as it is a whole new career move, which means learning everything from scratch really.

Having just read through what I have written it occurs to me that I like it when I find something new to do, but when I have been doing something for a long time I get bored of it.  So I need to see uni as a place that I will find out new things and complete my further education and end with an English Degree from UCS in Ipswich.  What could be more cool than that?

Cambridge – What an interesting place

Having weekends off is just about the best thing ever.  Since I finished working weekends a couple of weeks ago I have done something each day. Today we went to Cambridge to take Connor to his samba band, Arco Iris, who were busking around Cambridge for the afternoon.

So me and my partner Jean-paul said we would drive him there and while he was drumming around Cambridge we would do a little exploring, we had not been there for many years.  I had forgotten what a beautiful place it is.  The buildings are old, very cultural and well kept.  There are building sites in and around the city but no derelict places, or eyesores.

Christ Church Cambridge

It’s a very old place too, there was a beautiful classical building which houses Cambridge’s treasures.  This huge place was fronted by a huge amount of pillars which stood at least 25 feet.  It was a place we really wanted to go into but ran out of time, but we had wandered around for nearly 2 hours, went into a few shops, I bought a cosy knitted scarf from SuperDry.  There were lots of clothes we could have bought but decided not to allow ourselves to be impulse buyers, so I just stuck with the scarf and felt very happy with my purchase.  JP said it looks great with my new haircut, and I love it too.  upload8492786348358275876

It feels good to be able to afford something with a bit of quality about it. This scarf is so thick, it kept my little ears warm.  The weather today was really cold, the ice was still in the puddles in the afternoon, I know because I nearly slipped over and made a tit of myself!

One last thing I would like to say about Cambridge is that the people are really nice.  We have traveled to Norwich on several occasions when Connor was in Norwich Samba, and although the band were all lovely to him, the people of Norwich were not very chatty, quite miserable, and the shop assistants were grumpy as hell.  Cambridge is totally different.  All the shop assistants were polite, kind and extremely helpful.  Anyone who bumped into us said sorry, we said sorry back.  If we walked in front of a bike they didn’t curse or get annoyed but just nodded in recognition that we are idiots!

Connor & Band in the distance

Thanks Cambridge for a good day out, we ate yummy food, JP had a burger which cost £6.  I know costly right, but he did say it was the best burger he has ever had.  And he knows his burgers!  I had a cappuccino and a warmed almond and chocolate muffin, equally good from the Jamaica Place (it’s called something like that?).

We said we hope to go back soon to go in all the other shops we didn’t get a chance to go in.

I Really Love My New Job!

I cannot believe how happy I feel at the moment!  Why do I feel this way?  It is because I’m loving my new job.  I mean really enjoying the work I do…What is going on?

Today I wrote a blog on roses, to add a spin on it I wrote about Valentine’s Day, it is called: Roses on Valentine’s Day – What is your favourite?

I scheduled quite a few Facebook posts for the next few days, I have totally free reign on what content I include.  When we have a sale or special promotion I have to  include those but otherwise I choose from the vast bank of information there is on the Thompson & Morgan website.  There is so much to write about and it is so interesting and an enjoyable subject to research.

Research is, if I am truthful, the best part of my job.  I get a kick out of researching and investigating a subject in order to write about it.  My information has to be 100% correct so I often ask my colleagues if it is a difficult horticultural subject, there are a few who really know their stuff, and there are plenty more who have very good basic knowledge.  They are  always happy to help too, so it isn’t a problem to ask.

The colleagues I work with have just allowed me to fit in easily, almost like I have been there for more than a week and a half!  Because I did the work experience first I was able to  meet almost everyone in my new office,  I had the chance to speak to some of them and became friendly with a few of the.  Now I have had time to integrate myself because I am working with them and I have to say I find them all really decent people.  I couldn’t think of anyone of them that I think – owhh! I don’t think I’ll bother with them, or anything of the sort.  They are all good people who are hard working and conscientious.  This is such fab news and the reason why I am so happy.

Work and Life are going well, Uni hasn’t started but I only have a small amount of time left.  Yes it will be stressful and hard work but I am determined to get this bloody degree even if it nearly kills me!!  Lets hope it doesn’t do that, I am enjoying life too much.

2016 has been good to me so far.  How have you faired?  Is life treating you well or is it being a total B@*£H?

2nd Week at Work

I cannot believe it is already the end of Monday, in my second week at work.  Where did the day go?  Work is so interesting and there is so much to learn that I don’t have time to get bored.  Today I learnt more of my new job, and found it fascinating how marketing works, the stuff it involves and the information I have available.

Marketing is new to me so it is a subject I have a lot to learn.  This makes me happy because it means I won’t have time to get bored, as boredom is my worst enemy.  When I was in the call centre I used to get so bored and frustrated with the lack of variety in my job.  I know it was just a job to tide me over until I finished university, but oh God! it used to drive me mad.

Bored At Work!

The job was so repetitive and dull that I really did get to a point where I just couldn’t be bothered, and I would still do more work than some?  So now that I am in my new role I feel full of enthusiasm and excitement to see what’s new and what am I doing today?  The job has a wide variety of tasks to perform on a weekly, monthly and annual basis, but the information collected can be investigated and researched.  This means that you have to work out what is going on and why something has happened, this means that it won’t get boring because there is always going to be something to check out.

Bored At Work!

I really like the people I work with and for, they are a good bunch and I feel I have fitted in quite nicely.  I hope they feel the same?  I can’t say!  I miss my friends in the call centre but make a point to have lunch with them.  Especially Karen and Laura who are very dear to me.  I am also meeting Brenda for a coffee soon, she is another friend I have made that I am reluctant to give up so will go out of my way to see her from month to month.

Me and Karen, Me and Brenda and M and Karen again as I don’t have one of Laura and I.  Which is a shame so I will have to get a selfie on Friday when I see her at lunch.

These pictures were taken at our Christmas Do – it was a really good fun night.

Homemade Spices – 3 Ways

The Young Gardener

Happy new year everyone! I’m slowly getting over the festive season hype and hitting the ground running on work, projects and most excitingly, my garden for 2016.

Whilst the weather is still mild I’m out refreshing the compost bin, preparing my delicate infant plants for the snow (we can only hope, says the inner child in me) and tending to my winter flowers. I’m also thinking about new additions to the garden for spring time and have already bought a heap of flower and vegetable seeds to begin sowing in the coming months.

However, there’s not a whole bunch to do in the garden at the minute, apart from preparation, therefore I’m spending more time in the kitchen using up bits n’ pieces from the garden last year (still feels weird to call it last year)!

At the beginning of December I picked all my remaining chili plants (‘Cheyenne’…

Day 10 Work Experience

Last Day of Work Experience – Day 10

Wow!  I have finally finished my work experience at Thompson & Morgan.  I have done 10 days in the Direct Marketing Department, with Holly Taylor as my line manager and Clare Dixey as my manager.  And to be honest I couldn’t have asked for 2 better managers.  They are both really lovely, clever, knowledgeable and, they advise without being bossy, they coax me to do my best and to open up and be creative.

I really thought I was going to miss Sue Sanderson,  and I do.  But Holly has made life comfortable for me, and made the transition from being on work experience to functioning in my new role as e-commerce marketing assistant; to give it it’s correct title, easy and fun.  Sue hasn’t yet had her baby but I know it is imminent.

It seems that the new department I am in, or as I like to call it “El Dorado” is full of nice people, with kind dispositions.  I’m not saying that I will agree with everything they say, or be this happy every single day of my working life at T&M; but I do know that at the moment I feel very welcomed to the department, enthusiastic about my new job, and just a bit excited to get really stuck in!

El Dorado

El Dorado

It’s my last day tomorrow of my first week in my new job and what a week it has been.  Monday and Wednesday I was non-stop doing social media posts for FB for 2 companies, Twitter for T&M, thinking up things to put in those posts and learning about my new roles.  Believe me there is so much to learn, I am using loads of different programs to enhance my job, Photoshop is one that I am learning to use. Some of the programs and tools I use are not for others consumption,  I consider some of the stuff I do as sensitive and will be keeping it to myself (sadly I don’t work for MI5 though!).

Today the Direct Marketing Team, 27 of us, went to the Bedstead Brook Hotel for a day of team building exercises and presentations for the managers of each sub-department.  Holly did a presentation and she was really good, even though she was nervous you would never have known it.  She is very knowledgeable about her subject and I feel that I have a good mentor/manager.  I am going to learn a lot from her, and am already doing so. The other managers in the department also had to present their ideas for new business and a description of their job and the role it features in the wider company.

The presentations were great, informative and showed that there are some very talented and driven people in my new department, although it was refreshing to see that they too were nervous and it isn’t just me who gets anxious before giving a presentation.

I have to say that I have really enjoyed my first few days, and am going to make the most of this fab opportunity.  Grasping it with 2 hands, with bells on!  It has been a long day, I am quite tired but I just wanted to say thank you to Clare and Holly; and not forgetting Sue who was such a brilliant person when i first started my work experience way back in October.  These and all the other team members have made me feel welcome and wanted.

Thanks T&M

What’s next?

So it is the new year and a Happy New Year to you all!

I start my new job tomorrow, so I thought I would look at ‘what’s next’ for me?

Well I still have university to finish, the 10,000 word dissertation, the modules Intercultural Communication, and another year long module to complete is the Professional Writing Practice.  This is where I have learnt to do much of the work I am now undertaking in my new job.  Without this module I doubt I would have got the job I have.  The tutor has lots of information and wisdom to impart and does her best to get us all knocked into shape for the “Real World!”  So finishing uni is number 1 on the list.

My new job, we know about it and i don’t need to elaborate further.

Going on holiday this year, I want to get my passport and just bugger off.  Somewhere nice, we are supposed to be going to Coburg in Germany with my son.  He is the musical director of Suffolk School of Samba and there is a big gig there in the early summer.  I can’t wait to go, we are all excited actually.

Getting a puppy!  I am supposedly getting a new puppy for my birthday in February, it will be a teeny-tiny Pomeranian and Chihuahua.   I mean come on who wouldn’t want one of these?

puppy for WordP

I can’t think of much else at the moment.  It is late and I have been at work all day.  (I can hear the violins playing a sad tune for me!).  I am excited to start my new job and see where it takes m.

Tell me what you are going to be up to in the new year?  Is it a new baby perhaps or something even more exciting (if there is such a thing?).
